Large Cabinet Photo of Montauk Point- Cavalry-Hospital-Staging Area during the Spanish American War. This view shows Camp Wikoff from a distance, showing what was almost entirely established by the War Department at the close Spanish American War. Troops returning from Cuba were sent here to be quarantined and treated for tropical diseases. The Long Island Rail Road laid miles of track for bring in what supplies were needed, plus food, and other items for the troops.
Even the piers were built on Fort Pond Bay, allowing ships to bring in the soldiers and avoiding the public, as well as medical personel, horses, etc.
Among the 20,000 some troops, were Black infantry and cavalry, and Roosevelt’s 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry.
