Description
Marksman’s Certificate, Department of the Columbia 1892. earned by Private Thomas Severson of Co. C, 4th U.S. Infantry. At that time Severson was stationed at Vancouver Barracks, Washington. The certificate is signed by Tully McCrea, Major 5th U.S. Artillery, acting Inspector of Small Arms Practice, Department of the Columbia.
Folded in two places, otherwise in excellent condition.
Major Tully McCrea, USMA Class of 1862, began his career in the army as a 2nd Lt. in the 1st Artillery, eventually attaining the rank of 1st Lt. in 1863, and acted as the regimental adjutant from June to November in 1866. For a brief time he was promoted to captain in the 42nd Infantry until the reorganization in 1869, when he joined the 1st Artillery once again in 1870. Transferred to the 5th Artillery in 1888 as a major and to lt.col. in 1898. Again promoted to full colonel in 1900, commanding the 6th Artillery, soon to be the Artillery Corps in 1901 (eventually the Coast Artillery Corps a year later). McCrea retired as a brigadier general upon retirement in 1903, after 40 years of active service.
He held brevet ranks; for 1st Lt. for gallant and meritorious service in the Battle of Antietam, Md.; for Captain on July 3, at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pa., and Major for the Battle of Olustee, Florida.
