U.S. Navy Powder Bucket. SOLD

Description

Dated 1902, and either made and/ or issued from the Washington Navy Yard, this powder bucket must have been the last of its kind used by the U.S. Navy, with the advent of all the modern gunnery being introduced at the turn of the century and before.

Very reminiscent of the 1812 era navy powder bucket listed elsewhere on this site, the body is made of thick leather, painted black, with brick red painted interior. Two bales with brass “D” rings hold the leather covered rope handle. A brass base and rotating brass cover with hook latch was used to secure the powder within.

Measurements are: height to top of bucket proper – 9 inches; Base is 9 inches, and reduces in size just below the protruded lip around the upper body, being 9 inches as well.

There is stiff, and no doubt intended to be that way, body sunken in on one side. All stitching is tight. A large amount of the original black paint remains, as does the red on the interior surfaces.

These buckets are very scarce, and seldom seen. The last ones of the old sailing navy.
