Description

Cabinet Photo of MOH Recipient Louis H. Carpenter, 10th U.S. Cavalry. The image of Carpenter was taken by F. Gutekunst, Philadelphia.  Captain Carpenter is wearing his full dress uniform, with his 1881 dress helmet beside him with the regimental number for the 10th U.S. Cavalry (one of 2 black cavalry regiments).

The reverse is signed as “Major 5″ Cavalry, Bvt Colonel, USA.  Ft. Robinson, Neb., 1885.”  We have to assume here that this image was taken between 1881, and early 1883, prior to his promotion to major and transfer from the 10th to the 5th Cavalry.

The image is of high quality, and fine condition. There is a bit of paper damage to the mount below the image on the right side.  An old, but not period typed note is adhered to the reverse; assuming this being added by a collector or institution.

Louis Carpenter began his military career at the beginning of the Civil War, a private in the 6th Cavalry, rising to the rank of colonel of Colored cavalry by war’s end.  He had received four brevets during the war (Gettysburg, Winchester, and meritorious service during the war). His brevet ranks continued after the war with one in 1868 in an engagement with Inds on Beaver Creek Kans, and in 1898, he would receive the Medal of Honor for a forced march in Sept. of 1868 to the relief of Forsyth’s Scouts.

He would be promoted to Brig. Gen. in 1899.
