Description

This presentation pen case was presented to Quartermaster Sgt. Josiah Remick, by 2nd Lieutenant James O. Thompson, both men in the 17th Maine Infantry.  Thompson enlisted in August of 1862 as a 2nd Lt. and promoted to 1stLt. and Captain by Nov. of 1862 in Co. K.   Sgt. Remick enlisted about the same time as a commissary sergeant, and was promoted to quartermaster in Nov. of 1862;  both men were mustered out with the regiment at Washington,D.C. in June of 1865.

The pen case is empty, as the label describes an “ebony and silver penholder,” and that this presentation happened at Culpepper, Va. in Sept. 1863.

The case is covered in a thin black leather and has a single brass closure hook.  There is wear over all.  Velvet and silk interior.

Nice identified piece with what must be an interesting history.
