Description

Mountain Ice – Axe Made By Ames – Id’d to Soldier.  Marked on the axe head, “U S / AMES.”  Identified to HUGH BROOKS, craved in the handle.

This was a necessary piece of mountain troop equipment adopted in the 1942, used to probing for hidden crevasses under snow, and from creating steps for climbing, and in assisting the soldier in his climb up the steep slopes.  Pointed spike on the lower end for climbing.

The wood handle has tape on the lower portion for a better grip.  A sliding ring with leather wrist strap floats easily over the handle for easier use. A retaining screw is placed just above the height of the applied tape to keep the floating ring on the handle.

38 inches long.  The business end, spike and axe head is 12.5 inches.
