New England Militia Knapsack Circa 1830’s In Original Orange Paint

$1,200.00

New England Militia Knapsack Circa 1830’s In Original Orange Paint.  This present color with age appears to be a dull reddish orange, but originally was a vibrant orange. The trim may have been yellow but now again considering age, it has an ochre color. Black initials and decorative trim on the upper flap complete the paint scheme, even the buttons are paint the same color.

The canvas on the back side shows age and wear, probably by some rodent who didn’t appreciate what nesting not to use. Holed, and soiled, but still retain the shoulder slings and both same size buttons as used on the front.  There appears to be an unit number or initial on the back center, but make it out.

14 x 16 inches approx. Cover has a few holes and paint wear in spots, but what a fantastic presentation with sharp color. New Englanders are often mistaken for predisposed to dull, lack lustre colors, but evidence in house painting, and other mediums have shown otherwise, and here is another example.
