Description

This 1874 pattern canteen with the Chambers sling, is a modified 1858 Civil War smooth sided canteen, reissued in this case to the Mass Militia.  These canteens were used by Massachusetts from the 1870s to the Spanish American War period.

The front side is marked “Co. I, 5th / 102 (equipment number)).” On the back is a faint stamp, “State of Mass.”

Complete with stopper and chain.  Shows use with soiling and staining overall, sling is fine and not shredding like many when found, and has a period repair (see photo), but has a great look for display.

During the Spanish War, the 5th MVM was  called into federal service and mustered at Framingham, Mass and proceeded to Camp Meade, Penn. in September of 1898, then on to Greenville, South Carolina.   They trained there until mustered out on 9 March, 1899.

Very good condition.
