Description
CDV – Captain James W. Hart – 6th Mass Infantry. Hart served in all three of the 6th Mass. regiments, (3 months, 9th months, and 100 days). He first enlisted as a captain in July of 1859. At the beginning of the war, enlisted on April 22, 1861, in Co. D. He remained in Company D, in all of of the three enlistments as captain, mustering out in October of 1864.
Hart took his company through the Baltimore riots, and were then quarter in Senate Chambers in the Capital, and performed guard duty mostly in their 3 months service. The regiment was not mustered in until the 22nd of April in Washington. The 9th month 6th Mass, was used in the defense of Suffolk, Va., when that city was menaced by large confederate force under Gen. Longstreet, and in the following time had received loss in fighting around that area before discharged and returned to Boston. The 100 days unit, performed guard duty around Washington, and guarding confederate prisoners at Fort Delaware.
