An improvement on the ’76 pattern, this belt had equipment rings added to allow the hanging of equipment such as standard socket bayonet with new scabbard for this belt, a trowel bayonet with similar hook hanger, etc., other than the added rings, it is the same belt.
The belt is in very good condition with soiling and wear overall, mostly soiling giving the belt a great look. The leather is crazed, some dryness, chipping. The tongue is marked “Watervliet Arsenal” and inspection mark by , “A.R. Smith,” both visible but faint. Soldier’s name written in ink “Fox.”
The 1873 bayonet retains most of the original blue, and the scabbard, modified at Rock Island Arsenal is well marked in the leather frog with brass attachment hook is riveted to the scabbard. The leather frog has some scuffing, otherwise fine. The metal on the scabbard has a good deal of blue remaining, thinning overall and has some slight rust buildup near the leather mostly.
Made with 54 loops, in .45 caliber ammunition.
A nice accoutrement set.
