Beautiful embroidered State Seal Insignia
Even after the turn of the last century state national guard units still favored to keep their state’s seal on uniform headgear rather than the federal eagle. The majority of states adopted the federal eagle with slight changes, but New York and several others choose to keep that individuality….I’m glad they did as it makes for a great looking piece of headgear!
This is the pattern of 1902 with the slight flare to the crown. The lack of branch color around the base of the hat means it is an undress hat, or what would later be termed a service hat.
Made by Ridabock & Company, NYC., and marked “Russia Leather” on the sweat band stamped in gilt. The sizing label is found on the under side of the visor, and is a 6 7/8.
Condition is excellent, with the typical finish on the visor slightly affected by heat (attic storage likely).
Doesn’t get much better.
