The portrait appears to be prior to 1885, as the chevrons are not in gilt.

Description
7th Regiment NGNY Sergeant’s Miniature Portrait In Case. The portrait appears to be a photographic image on milk glass, and there appears to be no signature that I can see. The rank of this man is a battalion sergeant major. The artwork is very professionally done; the gilt aspects of the uniform are achieved with different shades oil paint. Detailing really makes this portrait pop.
Encased in a leather covered wood body, with dark purple velvet lining, The portrait is contained in a gilt metal frame.
Size of image and frame is 3 3/8 x 2 3/4 inches. The leather show wear, but can be improved. The push button lock works on the case.
Some research of the 7th Regiment will likely reveal the name of this soldier.
A super piece for a very famous New York State regiment.
