Description
An Interesting Variation- 1872/75 Officer’s Sack Coat, also known as the fatigue blouse. The blouse was first introduced in 1872, with the mohair braid, and slashes at the hip to allow the use of the sword hanger, as the belt was worn underneath the blouse.
NOTE: This blouse does not have shoulder straps, but I can make available an ideal set at additional cost.
This blouse falls into a period just after the discontinuation of the side slashes, and the 1875 blouse which dropped the mohair braid, and slashes altogether. There are certain elements with this blouse that makes you wonder if the coat was ever worn, as a tailor’s sizing label is still affixed to the back hem, the lack of evidence that no shoulder straps were ever added, the lack of mohair trim on the front of the coat and collars.
Black cotton is used to line the interior, striped cotton sleeve linings. The blouse has a left breast pocket.
This is a small size, but most suitable for display. Condition is excellent with the exception to of cuff buttons (two each side) having been removed, and some light moth tracking on the lower rear of the coat.
I have taken the liberty to offer a set of staff captain’s uniform insignia at an additional cost, if one would choose to display this coat with shoulder insignia. The cost of the lot would be 475.00. The straps are typical of the Civil War period, but certainly could be used correctly on this era blouse. The reason I believe the set is Civil War is that one of the two captain’s rank insignia are present. It was common practice during the war, that officers would not wear the shoulder straps, thus attracting un-wanted attention from snippers and others, and use just the rank. The hat cords are original and have some wear to the acorns. The rank bars wool base has some moth damage. The shoulder straps themselves are in fine condition.
This is a rare and desirable early Indian Wars officer’s blouse. I have no history for it.
