Colonel Charles A. Ranlett’s 1902 -1914 photographic journal of events.

In 1902, Charles A. Ranlett was a brevet captain of the Virginia Volunteers, and commandant of the Bethel Military Academy, Warrenton, Virginia, when he began this journal. He used a blank Qualification Scores record book for the M.V.M.  76 pages were used with most having at least one photo, and sometimes photogravure images from magazines, and booklets.  Some images are loose, but are of this period.  The only items  used earlier are cabinet images of Ranlett as a cadet at Newton High School, in Massachusetts, and another when he was a cadet at the US Military Academy.  There are three MVM documents when Ranlett was with the 8th Massachusetts Infantry.

Covered within are:

  • 1902-04 at Bethel Military Academy, ( training the grandson of Col. John S. Mosby, and nearly all others being descendants of confederate soldiers.
  • Training with the 8th Mass Infantry – 1908 -10.
  • Training with the 18th U.S. Infantry in Texas – 1911.
  • Lawrence Textile Riot, Lawrence, Mass. 1912.  A bloody affair, where then Captain Ranlett ordered a bayonet charge on the crowd.
  • Camp scenes in 1912 at Barnstable, Mass.
  • Photographs of equestrian training; jumping obstacles, firing revolver from horseback.
  • 1913 maneuvers in Bridgewater, Mass. with the 8th Mass.
  • New articles from 1909, Lasell Seminary for young ladies taking military training.
  • 1914 photogravure photos, much writing, about the Great Salem, Mass. fire.
  • Fencing photos. Large fencing broadside 14×22 inches. Signed on the back by Ranlett.
  • More views throughout, from other periods, no mentioned.

A wealth in information in written form, as well as using photographs from snap shots to 8×9 size, photogravures, real photo post cards, documents.

Spine is detached, book tight however.

Comes with Cavalry Drill Regulations United States Army, 1902, with inscription on the front flyleaf, “Capt.Chas. A. Ranlett (Va.) / Commanding {Mosby Troop of Farquier County   / Lt. Col. and Commandant Bethel Military Academy, Virginia.”  Covers rough, dis-bound rough at the spine, but complete.
