Egbert Ludovicus Veile before the Civil War, graduated from the USMA, Class of 1847, and served in Mexica as a 2nd lieutenant in the 1st U.S. Infantry, and later promoted to 1st lieutenant in 1850, before resigning his commission in 1853 to become a civil engineer.

He was state engineer of New Jersey, and later the chief engineer of Central Park, New York in 1856. When the civil War began, Viele was an engineer officer in the 7th Regiment of Infantry in NYC, and later was promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers.  In the 1880s he was commissioner of parks in the NYC, and served in the U.S. House of Representatives (1885-87).

This is a fine image of Captain Viele of the 7th regiment, with his engineer insignia seen plainly on the forage cap. He wears of 7th Regt. gray overcoat over his blue frock.
