Description

John W. Kimball, from Fitchburg, Ma was commissioned a captain in the 15th Mass Vols on July 30, 1861; major in August, and ltcol. in April of 1862. He was discharged for promotion as colonel of the 53rd MVM on November 8, 1862.

Kimball was wounded at Port Hudson, La., June 14, 1863, and mustered out September 2, 1863. Promoted to Brevet Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on March 13, 1865.

He was a scythe maker by profession

The image was taken in the summer of ’62 most likely in the rank of major when serving with the 15th Mass.  Photographed by J.C. Moulton, Fitchburg, Mass. and initialed the 3 cent revenue stamp.
