CDV – Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard (1818-1893).  West Point Graduate, had service in the U.S. Army form 1838 to 1861, then left to join the Confederate cause. Was the commanding officer who started the Civil War by firing on Fort Sumter, SC in April of 1861. He had a key roll in the first Confederate victory at Bull Run, and he held commands in both Eastern and Western theaters.  Beauregard championed the need for a standardized “Stars & Bars” battle flag for the Confederacy.

Beauregard had an active political career following the Civil War, and a deep admirer of Abraham Lincoln.  He died at 74, at his home in New Orleans.  Due to interest by Northern folk wanting photographs of the Southern leaders, this images shows Beauregard as a brigadier general in the U.S. Army, a rank he obtained in the Confederate Army only. He was a brevet major went he left the U.S. Army in 1861.
