Description
Ellis J. Graham enlisted first as a private in the 93rd New York Infantry on Oct. 8, 1861, but transferred out on the 29th of that month to join a cavalry regiment, but according to the database, his record is unclear, until he enlists in the 5th N.Y. Cavalry on February 2, 1864 at New York City. He later received a promotion to sergeant. He mustered out with the 5th at Winchester, Va, on July 19, 1865.
Although the image has some condition problems, it shows Graham in an 8 button mounted shell jacket, and he wears the insignia for his 5th NY Cavalry on the crown of his forage cap.
Interestingly enough, Graham has used his stencil to ID the image on both the front and back of this image. No photographer info.
The 5th NY Cavalry has a good war record.
