Captain Edward Payson Allen enlisted in July of 1864 as a 1st Lt., and commissioned into the 29th Michigan Infantry. He mustered out at Murfreesboro, Tn. on Sept. 6, 1865. He had served as regimental adjutant from March 27, 1865.
Signed on the image, “Yours E.P Allen.” The period ink on the back in written in a different hand, and has incorrect information, as to his being killed and the regiment in which he served.
The regiment first saw action in the defense of Decatur, Alabama, receiving a heavy fire from confederate as they took to the rifle pits there. Later had several engagements in the Murfreesboro. Tennessee area and more.
Allen was a two term U.S. Representative from Michigan 1887-1891. A lawyer by profession.
