Description

Circa 1820s-30s Gilt Staff Or Artillery Field Grade Officers Epaulets.

This pair of gilt epaulets from the 1820s period could have had use into the 1830.  The gilt boards are patterned with diamond shapes, ending in the crescents utilizing twisted gilt wire and sequins. There is a small amount of wire and sequin lose on each, but not very noticeable. The wide gilt wire fringe indicates a field grade officer, and the gilt was used by general staff and artillery in the regular army, however, the militia was not necessarily bound by those regulations.

The undersides of the epaulets have the original yellow silk cover the padding for the shoulders, and the beige canvas held the cloth ties that were laced through eyelets in the uniform cloth and tied down when worn. An old safety pin has been there for a good while and must have served to hold a label, which has long been gone.

Light toning to the gilt, and age wear overall.  A fine pair of early 19th C. officer’s epaulets.
