Heavy shadowing taken in the noon day sun
Civil War Mounted Cavalryman- Original Tintype. I bought this tintype with just a loose gilt mat with bends, ripples, and wear to the image, but was a nice representative image of a Civil War cavalryman, mounted outdoors in the noon day sun.
The intense light, and shadowing make the soldier look to be a black man, but under magnification, he is clearly white, with beard, and probably an older soldier (beard appears to be white). The saddle has his saddle bags attached, but no blanket roll, or other clothing and equipment for a long march. The soldier looked to be fully accoutered showing the saber at his side (image is in reverse). Saber, uniform trim, bit buckles have gilt applied; his trousers are tinted light blue.
Despite problems as stated, and shown, it is still a nice image in a most affordable range.
