Dug Model 1826 breast plate worn by Maine Vol. Militia.
This 1826 pattern shoulder belt plate was dug from a site at Winchester, Va. This plates have also been dubbed “Burnside” plates as many of this type have been found in 9th Corps camps commanded by General Burnside. This was recovered some years ago in one the Maine Volunteer camps. Originally sold through Norm Flayderman.
A nice dug example showing signs of bending and wear from the elements; the iron wire loop is rusted away leaving the main section still embedded in the mostly gone lead backing.
