French Souvenir From the Franco – Prussian War of 1871. To sum the main theme here, this is what I found that will tell you what this item is all about. The Siege of Paris in the early part of the Franco – Prussian War.
“HISTORICAL SOUVENIR / DECLARATION OF WAR / JULY 15, 1870 / SIEGE DE PARIS / FROM SEPTEMBER 18, 1870 TO JANUARY 28, 1871 / PROCLAMATION OF THE REPUBLIC ON 4 SEPTEBER 1870 – 300 CES OF THIS COMPOUND BREAD OF RICE OATS & BRAN / AFTER WAITING 2 (OR 5) HOURS IN EXTREME COLD.”
In the original frame measuring 6.5 x7 5 inches.
The bread is still intact on the printed souvenir sheet, along with the tokens of the emperors Napoleon. Some tears to paper in a few areas, mostly around the tokens. There is a lot more information here, but this will get you started.
Has the original label of the maker on the back, along with prior ownership.
