Description

Iron Padlock Marked “U.S.” on Keyhole Cover – Circa 1850s.  This 4 1/4 inch high black Japanned padlock has no markings other that the U.S. ownership stamp on the keyhole cover.  Circa 1850s with usage through the Civil War era, this lock would have been used in securing many items; boxes and crates of military equipments for weaponry, doors, perhaps company documents, etc.

The iron shows good usage with the Japanning chipping overall the surfaces.  The keyhole surface, and cover are a heavily patinaed brass.  There is no key.

Great display piece.
