Lot of Two Shot Bags – 19th Century, including an 1830s-40s Spring Valley Factory Patent Shot bag, Geo. Youle, New York Maker. George Youle built and operated a shot tower on Manhattan Island as early as 1823, and later at Spring Valley, Pennsylvania. The bag is made of course linen and used black stenciling on this 5.5 x 9.5 bag. The original height of the bag was probably a few more inches higher.
The Leroy Shot & Lead MFG Co., Wind Tower Shot bag, was operated in New York, (Logo and “Celebrated Eagle Brand” in the riband). “American Standard” on the back side. The linen bag stenciled in blue, is 5.5 inches high, showing much wear, and likely used for something other than the intended when emptied. Advertising found for this company dated in the 1870s.
Both of these shot companies found their product going west among other places, and considered Indian Trade items.
