M1880 Hunting Knife & 1890 Mod. Scabbard SOLD

Brass guard 1880 hunting knife made by Springfield has an 8.5″ long x 2″ wide x 1/8″ thick symmetrical blade.  The turned wood grip is 4″ long and has a half inch chip in the center of the handle. No marks are found on the pommel. The guard is stamped “U.S. Springfield” on one side and a serial number “879” on the opposing.  The knife is well made and maintained, all components are tightly fit together.  The blade has minor blemishes and light wear from use, but is still shiny and the edge is sharp.

The leather scabbard was designed and paired with the knife in 1880 as a one piece leather cover and loop, but by the end of the decade was being modified with a brass hook to slide over the belt in a more functional manner.  This scabbard is an 1890 brass hook modification manufactured by Rock Island Arsenal.  The leather is in great shape even at the thinnest end where riveted to the brass hook plate, despite being the point of most stress and damage to these type of scabbards.  The back of the brass hook is stamped “R.I.A.”

Not only a great condition M1880 knife, but an excellent condition leather scabbard compared to most I’ve come across.
