Description
Pre Civil War Militia Colonel’s Shoulder Straps With Variant Eagles.
This pair of shoulder straps can’t be anything other than militia, with silver eagles without the Federal shield, and clutching a sword, rather than the usual arrows and olive branch. The straps themselves are typically American with the single gilt bullion borders with intermittent bands of tightly twisted bullion, and narrow twisted wire for accent on either side of the borders, and light blue velvet for infantry, all sewn onto black wool. Most of the plush velvet has worn away. The underside is left exposed, common to the period.
Measurements: The eagles are 22mm (border to border); straps are 3 15/16″ x 1 3/8,” gilt border is 1/4″ (not including wire trim).
The mounting wires are nicely patinated, and no evidence of having been on anything else.
Some of the wire has come loose in one small area. Very light moth damage on edge of one strap only. There is a tear above the rounded part of an eagle’s right wing on one strap, but the tear is not near the hole where the wire went through (see photo). The velvet is still present beneath the eagles and around them.
A scarce pair of American militia insignia that possibly go back as far as the Mexican War era, and one of a kind as well.
