Description
Presentation Gold Ladies Of The G.A.R. Badge, presented “To EMMA A. GANNETT / From / Her Department / officers / AND / Circle of Friends” JUNE 1923.” The badge is approximately 3″ high, all gold except the pin bar only. The brooch has the initials, F.C.L. (Fraternity, Charity, Loyalty); the small round drop reads, “PAST / DEPT / PRESIDENT.” The main badge has the star of the G.A.R. with the round insignia of the GAR at the center in a different color gold. Lettering is finished with dark blue enameling.
According to the Maine Register, State Year-book and Legislative Manual for 1922, Mrs Emma A. Gannett was listed as president of the Ladies of the G.A.R.(Augusta) . The 1930 census listed her as a homemaker, and the 1940 census has her age at 85 years of age. Her approximate birth year is 1855; 85 years old in 1940, living at Carmel, Maine.
The badge is un-hallmarked, and in excellent condition.
