rovost Marshal’s Pass – 2nd Division 8th Army Corps June 11, 1863. A printed form document issued from the Winchester, Va. Provost Marshal’s office allowing D.E. Goldsmith of Martinsburg, Va., 3 days to pass on the same road as when he left. The signing officer is Captain W.S. McElwain, who wrote, “Pass a baggage no search,” and also signs as assistant Provost Marshal.
On the reverse, “All guradds & pickets will pass the within named person to ohio on any route he may wish to go. Martinsburg, Va / June 13th/63 (good for the trip)” signed by W.B. Kirby, Captain 126 ovi / act Pro Marshal.”
Mr. Goldsmith must have some assistance from some higher-up individual to allow this fine treatment, and have have had something to report to military authorities as to the situation in Martinsburg, and other cities and towns in what would become West Virginia, a new stated added to the Union after her splitting from Virginia.
