Spanish War- Philippine Insurrection Era 18th U.S. Infantry Canteen.  M1885 pattern canteen covered in canvas with “U.S.” on one side, and “I (crossed rifles) 18,” insignia on the other.  Complete with cork stopper, and chain.  Showing a good deal of water staining.

The 18th U.S. Infantry during the Spanish American War was serving in Texas with headquarters at San Antonio, while Co. “I” was stationed with the 3rd Battalion at New Orleans. With the defeat of the Spanish on Cuba, there was a great need for more regular troops in the Philippines. Co. “I” arrived at Manila on Nov. 25, 1898.

The canteen holds its form with two very shallow dings, not visible. A nice canteen with a regular Army history.
