Description

I have owned several very nice examples of 1812 era militia officer’s sword belts over the years, but this one is the nicest I have seen. Clearly the 3 inch wide Moroccan leather belt, richly embellished with fine gilt embossings, is of the 1812 era.  It is complete with the sword hangers, with their original swivels, and a very wide cross shoulder strap.

The infantry eagle plate is equally in choice condition with nearly all of the silver plating remaining.  It appears that the belt originally must have had either no buckle or another type that slides over the two straps and buckles that held the belt tight to the waist.  I feel it was a short time after that this eagle plate was added.  Photos show clearly how the keeper and addition of the plate to belt look to be a “make do.”

An older tag is attached to the belt stating that the belt belonged to a Samuel Goodell.  I have no concrete provenance on Goodell, but there was one in Vermont, who later moved to New York State.

This is about as good as it gets for this era sword belt.
