Traveling Writing Kit, C-1830-60s, this type made of fine leather stamped in a grid pattern, and was originally in a red polished finish now showing good wear. Flat bottomed for stability when been used, and two brass clasps that lock the lid when being transported. The interior shows nicely the original color, with all of the loops to hold pens, pencils, small straight edges, etc. and end compartments for holding inkwells, possibly containers for sand, etc. The pens are polished bone as are the other tools. The seal with ebony wood has some symbol on it, and the cased eraser is made by Rogers & Son, Sheffield.
The round holders on each end, are attached to hinges, that when the case is opened, ink and other containers can be set upright. One side is loose. Another round ring covered in the same red leather is loose as well, and don’t see were that attached itself inside; it may have held rolled up stationary. Interior show some ink spills, and light wear. No markings but could be English made.
A great period traveling accessory.
