Description
This cabinet photo was taken by Goff, Bismarck, Dakota; a well known western photographer, and signed by “Eugene Allshouse, 18th U.S. Infantry Band.”
Allshouse is wearing his 1885 dress uniform for musicians, but the helmet is a departure from regulations. Colonels of regiments would allow their bands to wear uniforms that may have varied from the norm, thus there are a good number of photos of bands members in the army at this time that show these irregularities.
This image has a damage lower left corner, having broken off, and repaired with tape, and could be repaired far better. Otherwise, the image quality is fine.
