Description

This cow bell was excavated near Crown Point, New York by Frank Kravic,and is featured in the ‘Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution,’ by George C. Neumann, and Frank J. Kravic.  As stated in the reference, “This cow bell was discovered in the refuse pile of a French and Indian War campsite of New York’s Champlain Valley.  Made of hammered iron, the rope-holding loop continues through the top of the bell and hooks onto the iron clapper.”  

Frank Kravis is known for identifying his relics with codes which he painted on items that were cataloged into his collection.  This one is marked, “C-361.”

An interesting 18th Century item from an important early American hot bed for military action during the French and Indian War (1759- 1776).
