Description

Fort Sumter- Major Robert Anderson Medal, by F. MULLER.  82mm copper/bronze in original case.  Dated 1861.

The bust of Anderson, with name on one side, THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, NEW YORK, HONORS THE DEFENDERS/ OF FORT SUMTER, FIRST TO WITHSTAND TREASON.

From what I have been able to find, only 51 of these medals were issued to men under Major Anderson’s command at Fort Sumter.  The scene on the back shows Peter Hart, one of the NCO’s who did his best to re-raise the flag after it was shot away by Confederate artillery.  The siege of Fort Sumter off Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, was the first engagement of the American Civil War.

The medal is in excellent condition, in the original case.

A scarce and desirable Civil War medal.
