Description

Lt. John Caldwell Gregg, Graduate USMA Class of 1887 from Pennsylvania. He entered service as a 2nd Lt. in the 16th Infantry; 1st Lt. in the 18th Infantry in June of 1894, transferring to the 4th infantry in 1897; Captain, 21 Infantry in March of 1899.  Another source in information beside Heitman’s records Captain Gregg’s service from 1898 as, “1st Lt. Company “F”.4th Infantry; Chief Quartermaster 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, 5th Army Corps; Chief Quartermaster and Commissary, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 5th AC, Aide de Camp to Brigadier General R.H. Hall, USV (July to Dec. of 1898), and killed in action in the Philippines (battle of Mariquana, P.I.) 31 March, 1899.

The photograph was taken at Fort Leavenworth, as a lieutenant, and signed on the back; photographed by H.P. Stevenson. His collection of shooting medals is most impressive, as well as some society medals/badges. One badge (second from right- is the Son of Civil War Veteran badge;
