Description
24th Army Corps Badge – Independent Division.
The 24th Army Corps, Department of Virginia, was created by General Orders No. 297, Adjutant General’s Office, on December 3, 1864. The corps was created by the joining of the 10th and 18th corps white troops. In March of 1865, Commanding General John Gibbon of the 24th Corps, stated that there was a, “great want in the command of a corps badge. Considering the advantages of such a designation, I think all parties, both of the old Tenth, and Eighteenth Corps would cheerfully acquiesce in the adoption of a new badge. I respectfully request…..an order making the Heart the badge of the Twenty-fourth Corps.”
The white hearts were in the period referred to as the “Independent Division,” and fought before Richmond, and that area at the end of the Civil War.
The brass heart is 2 inches high. The white woven material is held in place by a brass panel behind it, and attached by use of 4 brass fold-over tabs. The badge was pinned on using a “T-bar” pin.
I believe the construction is common to those found being worn either on caps or uniforms during the Civil War.
Condition is very good.
