Captain Wilber E. Wilder Signed Document – MOH In The Indian Wars.

Written on “Headquarters U.S. Military Academy” letterhead, dated February 14, 1898.  Special Order No. 24., regarding members of Company “A” of the Corps of Cadets having failed to exonerate themselves from participation in the serious breach of discipline which occured in their barracks a few day prior to this issue of SO 24. The document goes on to mention the details of the matter, and the names of the cadets involved. The document is signed by W.E. Wilder, Captain 4th Cavalry, as Adjutant, for Commandant of Cadets, Lt.Col. Otto L. Hein.

Wilder graduated from USMA, Class of 1877.  He played a key role in the surrender of Geronimo in 1886; for a short time was acting superintendent of Yellowstone National Park, during March and June of 1899.  Wilder saw action in the Spanish American War, Mexican Border – Pancho Villa Expedition, and in WWI commanded the 168th Infantry Brigade of the 84th Division. He retired as a Brigadier General.

On April 23rd, 1882, while serving with the 4th U.S. Cavalry, First Lieutenant Wilber E. Wilder was awarded the Medal of Honor, for “Assisting, under a heavy fire, to rescue a wounded comrade,” at Horseshoe Canyon, New Mexico.  The medal was issued on 17 August, 1896.
