Description
CDV- General William H. French.
William French was a career army officer, USMA graduate 1837. Served in the Seminole, and Mexican Wars; ADC to President Franklin Pierce, and during the Civil War saw many battles. At Gettysburg, he took over a badly mauled III Corps after Gen. Dan Sickles was wounded. French ended as Colonel of the 4th U.S. Artillery at the end of the war. He was later serving in the regular army at various post until his retirement in 1880.
