Description

CDV – Civil War Era Photo Featuring John Barrett Sloan -31st & 179th NY.

Sloan enlisted at New York City, as a 1st lieutenant, and commissioned into Co. “I”, 31st NY Infantry, and mustered out in June of 1863. Sloan was promoted to captain in January of 1862 (Co. A). He was wounded at  Fredericksburg, Va. on May 3, 1863.

In May of 1864, he was commissioned  into the field and staff of the 179th New York Infantry and was killed at Petersburg, Va. on June 17, 1864.

The three other gentlemen in the photograph may be brother officers in the 31st New York, or friend.  Sloan is wearing his overcoat, and the quatrefoil on the sleeves appears to be for either the rank of Captain, not being wide enough for the triple strands of quatrefoil showing.  The image was taken in Albany, most likely between regiment enlistments, and was taken by Churchill & Denison, Albany.

Very good – fine condition.
