CDV – Signed By 2nd Lieutenant Charles McCauley 3rd US Artillery, graduated from the USMA Class of 1870, and began his service in the 3rd U.S. Artillery, transferring to the 3rd U.S. Cavalry in 1876.  McCauley transferred to the Quartermaster Department as a major in 1894. He rose to the rank of colonel.

Signed on the reverse, “Very Sincerely Yours / C.A.H. McCauley / 3rd U.S. Artillery /Fort Hamilton / New York Harbor / Jany 25th 73.”

This image was most likely taken a few years after graduation (1873) from the West Point in 1870.  He was born in Maryland, and was appointed from Pennsylvania. He his seen here dressed in his the new 1872 pattern uniform, with shoulder knots replacing the epaulets, and a double breasted coat with bullion vertical cuff trim; a 1 inch trouser strips replacing a welt in the branch color.
