Description
Bronze Ashtray For Submarine U.S.S. MINGO (SS-261). The bronze ashtray has some heft to it, weighing over 2 pounds. 1 1/16 inch high with 4 incorporated cigarette slots, and stamped with the sub’s name. There are no other markings.
USS Mingo was a Gato class submarine, built by the Electric Boat Co., Groton, Connecticut, and launched on 30 November, 1942; commissioned 12 February, 1943. She left New London Naval Base for the Pacific in May of 1943. USS Mingo had 7 combat patrols, 5 of them deemed successful, and received 5 battle stars for her WWII service. She was later loaned to the Japanese in 1955-1966, under the Military Assistance Program.
