Description

CDV – The “Brave Color Bearer” Katey Brownell- 8th Rhode Island Regiment. At the beginning of the Civil War, she accompanied her husband when he enlisted into the 1st Rhode Island Infantry. She served with the regiment in combat, and during the first Battle of Bull Run, held the regimental flag on the high, despite many confederate bullets.  Colonel Ambrose Burnside, commanding the regiment named her the daughter of the regiment.

She and her husband Robert, reenlisted into the 5th R.I. Infantry in 1862, and again fought at Newbern, N.C.  She also saved the lives of several soldiers at that battle.  After the battle, with her husband on of the wounded, both of the Brownells were discharged from the service.  Kady was the only woman to receive discharge papers from the Union Army.

In later life, she became of member of Elisa Howe Jr. G.A.R. Post #3, Bridgeport, Conn.
