USS VIXEN ( PY -4) Cap Tally – Yacht Josephine.

The yacht was purchased by the Navy during the Spanish American War, and later recommissioned for service in WWI.

Josephine was a steel hulled schooner built in 1895, in Elizabethport, New Jersey, and acquired by the US Navy for use during the Spanish American War. USS Vixen was commissioned in 1898, and served with distinction during the Battle of Santiago, Cuba. Vixen was recommissioned in 1917, and was used to patrol the Eastern Seaboard, and decommissioned after the war in 1919.

The black silk tally is 36 x 1.5 inches, with a good deal of gilt remaining in the lettering.  Typical creases and folds,
