Description

USS TEXAS (1892 or BB-35) Cap Tally,

The 1892 Texas was commissioned in 1895, she performed blockade duty against the Spanish, and took part in the Battle of Santiago, Cube in 1898.  USS Texas (1892) was decommissioned in 1911, when the new USS Texas (BB-35) was laid down at Newport News, Va. that same year. Launched the next year, and commissioned in 1914, the new version several months later was sent to the Gulf of Mexico during the “Tampico Incident” (Mexican troops detained an American gunboat there). She remained on station there to support American Troops going ashore at Veracruz, Mexico in that same year of 1914.  Texas saw very little action during WWI.

During WWII, Texas escorted troop carrying, and cargo ships bound for England. USS Texas took part in Operation TORCH, the invasion of North Africa in November of 1943, and again part of the largest invasion fleet every assembled for D-Day in June of 1944. The named cap tally would not have been worn much after America entering WWII.

The likely period would be for the later BB-35, but the other tallies listed this week, show the possibility of being earlier.

The black silk tally is 38 x 1.5 inches overall, and the lettering still has a good amount of the original gilt.

A tally for either ship having good naval history.
