Description

Stereoview of LtCol. Alexander & Officers of the 47th PA At Fort Jefferson, Florida.

Lt. Colonel George W. Alexander, stands near his mount with his officers gathered around him for this wartime stereoview taken at Fort Jefferson, in Florida’s Dry Tortugas.

Written on the reverse, ” Left Wing officers of the 47th PV. Fort Jefferson, No 15.  Lieut. Col. Alexander & officers.” This appears to be a period inscription in pencil. Faint but legible.

The 47th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry was formed in the last summer -fall of 1861, and mustered at Camp Curtin, Harrisburg to serve for three years. The regiment was assigned to Key West, Florida in General Brannan’s brigade in January of 1862 and remained in Florida at various locations until 1864. (garrisoned Forts Taylor, Jefferson). The regiment engaged the enemy at Pocotaligo, near Hilton Head, S.C. in June of 1862. In the Fall of 1864, now part of the 1st Division of the 19th Army Corps, part of Gen. Sheridan’s Army of the Shenandoah, the regiment took part in the major battle in that valley including Winchester, Fisher’s Hill, and Cedar Creek, Va. The regiment was part of the Grand Review in Washington , then sent south to Savannah, Georgia, then to Charleston before mustered out in January of 1866.

Very good over all, with some damage to upper right corner, and light soiling.
