Discharge For An 8th Cavalry & 22nd Infantry Soldier.

This discharge for Smith F, Foster, a Trumpeter, was issued at Fort Duncan, Texas on 21 July, 1883, and signed by the post commander, Lt. Colonel Zenus Bliss, 19th U.S. Infantry, and by his captain of Co. “L” Louis Morris, 8th Cavalry.

The discharge comes with a large group of records from the Nation Archives, giving information about the stations he served at, and the campaigns he was involved in during his career, along with medical and pension records.

Foster served at Fort Bascom, NM, with scouting and operations against Indians on the Texas, Indian Terr. (Okla), and NM borders, fights with Cheyenne and Kiowa Indians in 1874. To Fort Brown, Texas in December of 1875, and his company served in the campaign against Kiowa, Cheyenne, and Comanche for over 30 days that year. Into the early 1880s, Foster’s troop scouted, chased Indians, cattle thieves, smugglers.  He enlisted several time during his stint with the 8th Cavalry and served at various posts; Fort Riley, Fort Meade, DT, etc. (see photo of document showing stations).

In July of 1893, he again re-enlisted in Co. B, 22nd Infantry as a musician at Columbus Barracks, O., Ft. Crook, Nebr.,

Quite a career with nearly all frontier service with two different units.

The vellum document is in fine condition.


Zenus Randall Bliss,USMA Class of 1854, began his career in the 8th infantry, was brevetted Brig. Gen. in 1865. and full Brigadier General U.S. Army in 1895. Awarded the Medal of Honor while serving with the 7th Rhode Island Vols. at the battle of Fredericksburg, Va, 13 Dec, 1862.

Louis Thompson Morris, began his service with the 19th U.S. Infantry as a 1st lieutenant, transferred to the 3rd Cavalry in Aug os 1869, and then the 8th Cavalry as a captain in Dec. of 1873. He received brevet ranks of captain and major for gallant service during the Atlanta Campaign, and Nashville.

Great history and some good autographs.
