John H. Johnston Full Stock Percussion Large Bore Rifle. A old-timer in untouched condition. This tiger maple full stock, .50 caliber double set triggered percussion rifle. The barrel measures 41 1/4 inches. On the top flat of the barrel behind the buckhorn sight is signed J.H, Johnson in a script fashion. The stock has all brass furniture featuring a finely crafted patch box that blends into the buttplate, and a long toe plate with patch box button that meets the rear of the trigger guard. Behind the breech tang is a silver shield escutcheon.
Overall in very good condition for a well used rifle. Small scratching and dings overall; the lock showing a good deal of rust buildup.
John Henry Johnston was a well known Pennsylvania long rifle maker, along with other members of the family. He founded the Great Western Gunworks shortly after the Civil War.
A large bore gun intended bring down sizable pry, the type that could have gone west.
