Huggins is photographed in a Cavalry shell jacket. No backmark, but the photographer has initialed the Revenue stamp in July of ? In the period of this tintype, the 2nd Colorado Cavalry (consolidated from the 2nd & 3rd Colorado Infantry. This unit skirmished with guerrillas and irregular forces in the western Missouri and later the Kansas area to fight against Indians, and Confederate forces under Sterling Price, and followed Price into Texas where he surrendered. The 2nd then returned to their headquarters at Fort Leavenworth, Ks. For the rest of their service, the 2nd Colorado would be stationed along the road, that would soon be named the Smokey Hill road, in Kansas, with many skirmishes with Cheyennes. Much more history with this regiment, and their service on the Plains.
