New England Painted Knapsack Circa 1030s-40s- “RIFLE CO. 16TH REGT.” The flap is made of an oil cloth, decorated with a printed red and white geo/floral design, trimmed with green wool, and backed with black cotton. Gilt painted letters, numbers with a large central painted star. The flap is connected to a natural color linen pocket to which is attached the blue cotton shoulder straps. An additional piece of brown cotton is attached to one of the shoulder straps to connect with the other strap to prevent the knapsack from coming off the shoulder.
The oil cloth flap shows wear overall the surface, by wear or storage, not by moth as there is no moth damage on any other sections of the knapsack.
The flap measures a bit better than 12″ square. The linen bag, or pouch is slightly smaller.
Displays well.
